Susceptible Trait - Airborne Infection
DISCLAIMER: The original concept of Susceptible was created by Spyjack!
Check out the original in his amazing map + scenario, Facility-7 !
Have you ever wanted to be one of the non-immune mentioned in the TV & radio?
Have you ever wanted to live in true fear of the Knox Infection?
Have you ever wanted the true hardcore apocalyptic experience?
Have you ever wanted to subject yourself to punishment for seemingly no reason?
Well now you can!
As you may know (or not), our characters within the Project Zomboid lore are people who were lucky enough to be naturally immune to the airbourne strain of the Knox Infection.
This hardcore mod adds a negative trait that allows you to play as a character who was not so fortunate.
This mod adds the trait "Susceptible" as a negative trait for +11 points.
With the Susceptible trait, your character is at risk of contracting the airborne Knox Infection when near zombies. While getting close to a single zombie will not necessarily instantly render you infected, there will always be a chance! Naturally, the more zombies there are and the closer you get, the greater the risk!
(Zombie corpses are not counted, only live zombies. Are they really alive?)
You can prevent infection from the airborne virus by wearing face masks, certain headgear, or a hazmat suit! Some more examples are listed below.
As masks are worn, they will degrade over time- this is due to the number of potentially infected particulates dirtying and clogging the materials until they're rendered useless. This means that the more dangerous the air is, the faster your mask will degrade.
Certain traits, such as "Resilient" and "Prone to illness" will also have an effect on the distance and chance of infection. Rumors also say that one time, a 'Lucky' individual got a face full of the virus, yet nothing happened. Unfortunately, he died to a horde the next day, so we couldn't confirm.
Masks and certain headgear will protect you from getting infected when in close proximity to zombies.
For the sake of gameplay variety, we've added masks and headgear that may not necessarily be considered "air filtering". If this bothers you, roleplay that your character has a bandana/cloth underneath their headgear to act as a filter.
Keep in mind that masks have varying degradation rates, becoming absolutely worthless when they reach 0 condition! Luckily, the degradation rates of the higher quality masks will take a long time if you avoid hordes!
Tiers are based on how long it takes for that mask/headgear to reach condition 0. No matter what their condition (unless it's 0), it will protect you from the virus.
E.g. A gas mask or a bandana both provide 100% protection, unless their condition reaches 0- then they stop working.
Fully repaired cars will also protect you from the airbourne virus. Should the windows break, however, and you'll be in deep trouble!
Protection Level 6 = Most durable protective equipment (Will take longer to reach 0 condition).
Protection Level 1 = Least durable protective equipment (Will reach 0 condition the quickest).
NOTE: Cloth masks are safe only up to 3 zeds. 4 zeds or more can cause infection!
You can craft a cloth face mask at the start of the game. Use this to your advantage, but beware! This mask may struggle to keep you safe if the air is too polluted!
REMEMBER: Bandana facemasks will not protect you from full hordes, only a few zombies!
Are there any masks from modpacks you'd like included? Let us know!
As masks will degrade it's important to make sure they're constantly maintained. This can be done by certain items depending on the headgear/mask.
Mask filters & items can be looted, as well as on special masked zombies that you may encounter.
WARNING! Applying bleach to a mask you are actively wearing can damage and potentially kill you!
The Mask UI displays the condition of your mask.
The colour of the circle around the mask shows how close the mask is to failing. If it's turning red, then it's about to fail and you should get away from zombies!
You can also move the UI position on your screen if it is conflicting with other mods.
IF AN ITEM ISN'T SHOWN IN THE MASK UI, THEN IT WON'T PROTECT YOU
- You will now gain Stress from encountering zombies. This is dependent on the mask quality, mask condition and no. of zombies present.
- You cannot eat in "unsafe areas". When safe, upon eating actions you will automatically unequip & reequip your mask after eating. Make sure to not move when reequiping your mask!
