Operation Aintree was intended to secure the narrow foothold formed by the Allies between Eindhoven and Nijmegen during the Operation Garden Market and the destruction of the German foothold west of the Meuse, in preparation for the later Allied advance into the nearby German Rhineland. The Battle of Overloon from 30 September to 18 October 1944 was a clash between the Allies and the German army that took place in and around the village of Overloon in the southeast of the Netherlands. The battle, which ended in Allied victory, began after the Americans launched Operation Aintree. After that, the Allies were able to liberate the city of Venray.
