Elden Power Attack v1.2

You feel like after fixing attack animations, movement, behavior, and the camera with SkySA/ABR & TDM, Skyrim combat still feels unresponsive and clunky, and you just can't figure out why?

I believe I know one major culprit: the CONTROLS.

Did you ever feel frustrated when you

  • pressed the attack key but the attack didn't go off because your character was in the wrong stage of their previous animation?
  • wanted to do a light attack but pressed the attack key 0.0000000001 seconds too long and accidentally did a power attack instead?

The first case happens because unlike good fighting games Skyrim has no input buffering at all.
The second case can in part be fixed by mods like One Click Power Attack or Separate Power Attacks.
I couldn't bring input buffering into Skyrim (some other modders probably could) but I tried to somewhat alleviate both issues with this mod.

CONCEPT
  • You can now hold down the attack key for as long as you want and you character will do consecutive Light Attacks for as long as the key is pressed.
  • You can now only do Power Attacks the same way Heavy Attacks are handled in Elden Ring's (and Dark Souls) Keyboard & Mouse controls: by pressing the attack key while a modifier key (configurable) is held down.
OVERVIEW

VANILLA      with ELDEN POWER ATTACK
LMB(click) -> right normal attack LMB(click) -> right normal attack
LMB(hold)  -> right power attack  LMB(hold)  -> consecutive right normal attacks
    SHIFT+LMB -> right power attack
RMB(click) -> left normal attack RMB(click) -> left normal attack
RMB(hold)  -> left power attack RMB(hold)  -> consecutive left normal attacks
       SHIFT+RMB -> left power attack
LMB+RMB(press) -> dual wield normal attack LMB+RMB -> dual wield normal attack
LMB+RMB(hold)  -> dual wield power attack  SHIFT+LMB+RMB -> dual wield power attack

DUAL WIELD BLOCK OPTION

Alternatively to the dual power attack option you can also configure the mod to let you block while dual-wielding or fighting unarmed by pressing SHIFT+LMB+RMB (check the config file included). Other than regular blocking this puts you in a state of constant block with a click, until you press it again. (this doesn't apply when you've got SkySA installed, since SkySA already lets you block with the left key while dualing)

GREATSWORD & BATTLEAXE DUAL ATTACK INCLUDED

The mod also unlocks the missing 3-hit dual attack animation for 2hand weapons.

WHAT DOES THIS IMPROVE?

MUCH BETTER COMBO CONTROL

Being able to do consecutive light attacks makes pulling off combos much easier. Just hold the attack key until the right animation starts, no need to spam-click. Never again will a power attack be accidentally triggered.

Example: Without this mod if you wanted to do a SkySA power attack 4, you needed to do
click->click->click->click->hold
With this mod you just
hold until the 4th light attack->press shift (while still holding attack)

FULL CONTROL OVER POWER ATTACK TYPE

The advantage of having a modifier key compared to other mods that add a single power attack hotkey: It works with right hand, left hand and dual power attacks (at least the non-SkySA version) because it just modifies this action.

95% SCRIPT-FREE

No behavior edits involved, lightweight esl-flagged mod, now script free thanks to dTry's Key Utils, just one tiny, inoffensive papyrus file to handle config. Compatible with Anniversary Edition from version 1.1 on.

CONFIGURATION

You can configure the modifier key by editing:
\Elden Power Attack\SKSE\plugins\dtryKeyUtil\config\custom\Elden.ini

With version 1.2, gamepad input should now be fully supported.

You can customize the effects of the mod by editing
\Elden Power Attack\EldenPowerAttack.ini

  • fInitialPowerAttackDelay controls the hold time for power attacks in vanilla. With Elden Power Attack, this value determines the time you can hold down the attack key WITHOUT pressing shift before you start doing consecutive light attacks.
  • ]fSubsequentPowerAttackDelay controls the time between two consecutive power attacks. You'll have to find your optimal value here, it should be smaller than 1 for consecutive attacks to work, but setting it too low could cause animation clipping
COMPATIBILITY

ADXP | MCO
Tested with MCO Beta 1.3 version. Works the best out of any SkySA version.

SKYSA 2
Tested with SkySA version 2.8 available on the Skyrim Guild website. The main idea of this mod was to make SkySA combos easier, so this is what it's intended to be used together with.
Do not use One-Click Power Attack together with Elden Power Attack!
When used with SkySA, the function of the left hand attack key is not changed because SkySA modifies dual wield behavior such that you attack only with the right hand attack key and block with the left, just like when you're one-handing (the same goes for unarmed).

SKYSA 1.9
The main version of Elder Power Attack does not work properly with SkySA v1.9 from the Nexus, but there's a separate plugin availabe which I've tried to make somewhat compatible. Consecutive normal attack work, but I can't turn off light attacks while the modifier key is pressed. That means you still have to shift + HOLD attack key to do power attacks. Some other bugs might be in store. If you think about using this version, I'd like you to consider upgrading to SkySA 2 or MCO instead. Those are overall much better.

ABR
Tested with ABR version 6.48, seems to work pretty well. However, Better Power Attack Direction Control (which is recommended to be used together with ABR) is currently not compatible. Some will say you don't really need BPADC when using Elden.

VANILLA BEHAVIOR
Supports all melee weapons and unarmed in a vanilla setup for right hand, left hand and dual wielding and directional attacks.

ONE CLICK POWER ATTACK
Don't use both together, they change the same thing, but in different ways.

SEPARATE POWER ATTACKS
Same as above

The default value of timescale in Skyrim SE is 20, which means 1 minute in real life, counts as 20 minutes in game. With this mod 1 minute in real life, counts as 6 or 10 minutes, so time in-game passes more slowly and the days (and nights) last longer.
